BANGKOK, 10 July 2015 – Representatives from indigenous groups in Thailand have called on the National Reform Council (NRC) to protect the rights of the indigenous people and reduce social inequality.

The group submitted their petition to NRC member Vithaya Kulsomboon, asking the NRC and the government to push for legislation on a civic group for indigenous persons in Thailand. The petition also called for the nationalization of all children born in Thailand and the reduction of the Thai national verification process.

The group also asked the government to adhere to international standards of recognizing and respecting the rights of indigenous peoples in order to protect the rights of the indigenous in Thailand and reduce social inequality.
