Help steadily given to stranded Thai workers in Indonesia

BANGKOK,  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that efforts are continuously made to rescue Thai workers stranded on Indonesian islands, with over a thousand of them already brought back home.

Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry Sek Wannamethee commented on the ministry’s ongoing assistance to Thai fishermen in Indonesia, saying many of those who were exploited by human traffickers have been brought out of the various islands, including Ambon Island and Benjina Island.

Thus far, 1,244 victims of Thai nationality have returned to their motherland safely, with the latest batch of 60 workers having arrived yesterday. Another group of approximately 150 persons has also been issued certificates of identity and is awaiting deportation to Thailand.

Mr Sek confirmed that the matter has been treated by the Thai government with priority as well as thoughtful consideration in regard to bilateral relations and Indonesian law.

As for victims who have been brought back, the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson revealed that they are receiving assistance from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the Royal Thai Police and other related agencies in terms of rehabilitation and prosecution of culprits.
