Pol Maj Gen EkaratLimsangkat, deputy commander of the Highway Police, said about 640,000 vehicles already returned to Bangkok on Jan 1 and heavy traffic from regions was converging into the capital today.

He said that many vehicles from the upper northeastern provinces of KhonKaen and UdonThani were entering Mitrapharp Highway and traffic soared on the highway’s section from Ban Phai intersection in KhonKaen to Si Khiu district of Nakhon Ratchasima province.

Traffic flows were slow especially near gas stations and restaurants but downhill routes were helpful, he said.

From the North, vehicles were passing Phitsanulok province and reaching Nakhon Sawan province. Traffic was slow from Nakhon Sawan to In Buri district of Sing Buri province, especially at restaurants and gas stations.

From the South, traffic was fine on Bangkok-bound Phetkasem Highway until it reached Wang Manao intersection in Ratchaburi province. It slowed down after entering Rama II Road that was still blocked by construction sites at many locations, Pol Maj Gen Ekarat said.

He expected heavy Bangkok-bound traffic would resume on Jan 4 and 5. (TNA)
