BANGKOK, Thailand – The government is scaling up cost-of-living relief efforts by deploying mobile markets and grocery trucks nationwide to deliver discounted essential goods directly to communities.

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun chaired a meeting at Government House on April 16 with deputy interior ministers and senior officials to advance the “Blue Flag” program. The effort aligns with government policy to address rising living costs driven by global economic pressures.

Under the program, staple goods including rice, eggs, palm oil, and sugar are sold at prices 30 to 60 percent below market rates, covering more than 200 items. Officials estimate the measure will cut household expenses by at least 500 baht per month, with grocery trucks deployed to serve communities with limited access to traditional markets.

Authorities plan to expand participation to about 3,800 mobile vendors nationwide, using knowledge gained from a pilot program in Nakhon Ratchasima province. Entrepreneurs with suitable vehicles are being encouraged to join, as the program seeks to stabilize prices, support small businesses, and improve access to affordable goods in remote areas. (NNT)
