BANGKOK, 24 August 2015, – Secretary-General of the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Narong Sahamethaphat has warned the public of a resurgence of the deadly dengue fever, saying the disease has already killed 37 people.

According to Dr. Narong, the accumulated number of dengue patients from January to August is 51,500, the figure that is twice the number of last year. He said that most of the 37 who were killed by the disease were from the central region, followed by the northeast, the north and the south.

The secretary-general of public health disclosed that many of the patients were aged between 10-14, reminding the public that a mosquito bite is the common cause of the disease. He also underlined the fact that those who had contracted dengue fever can be infected with it again.

Dr. Narong instructed the provincial health office to organize a weekly drive to eradicate mosquito breeding grounds in the area. He also ordered hospitals nationwide to step up their measures against the disease and to treat the existing patients as soon as possible, in order to contain and eliminate dengue fever.

Dengue symptoms include severe joint and muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, fever, exhaustion, and rashes. The presence of these health problems is characteristic of dengue fever. Patients who exhibit such symptoms must be rushed to the nearest hospital for proper treatment.
