Former police chief registered as EC candidate

BANGKOK, 30 September 2013 – Permanent Secretary of the Transport Ministry Police General Vichean Potephosree has submitted his application as a candidate to become an Election Commissioner. The expiration of the 7-year term of the current 5-member Election Commission (EC) is now due.

Police General Vichean said his decision for the candidacy followed recommendations by several respected people he knew, in addition to his wish to put in good use his experiences from local and national-level elections he used to handle and as an adviser of the EC. He vowed to work with honesty and neutrality.

He said if he was not selected an Election Commissioner, he would continue to be an adviser of the EC, helping the commission in whatever means he can, even after his retirement.

Currently there are 16 EC candidates. Applications are accepted until today, after which a selection committee will select 3 suitable candidates whose names will be forwarded to the Senate for approval. Two other candidates are currently being processed by the Constitutional Court judges and will be finalized today as well.
