NAKHON PHANOM, 1 September 2015  – The Nakhon Phanom Office of Fisheries has suggested local residents to slow down their fish farming as the rising water level in the Mekong River could put them at risk of losses.

According to the forecast by the weather station in Nakhon Phanom province, heavy rains will likely cause the Mekong River to swell and four riverside districts, namely Mueang, That Phanom, Ban Phaeng and Tha Uthen districts, could be affected by overflows. The water level is reportedly increasing rapidly, currently standing at 7.5 meters.

The Fisheries Office has warned fish farmers that the drastic rise in water level could kill their fish, explaining that the fish might eat less food and become depressed due to their inability to adapt to the quick change in environment. Therefore, the office encouraged the farmers to take special care of their fish and refrain from bringing in new batches for the time being.

During this period, officials are making visits to local fish farms in a bid to give advice to farmers and provide them with necessary equipment, such as water aerators.
