BANGKOK, 19 July 2015 -Continued rainfalls have eased drought problems in the Northeast, whereas the central region is still gripped by the prolonged dry season.

In the central province of Ang Thong, drought-hit farmers have stopped diverting water during this period, following the government’s announcement of sea water invasion expected between July 18 and 20.

Rajaprajanugroh Foundation has, meanwhile, launched water service centres in 53 provinces to help alleviate the situation in drought-stricken areas upon the suggestion of His Majesty the King. Villagers can acquire clean water at the centres for no charge whatsoever until the crisis is over.

While the arrival of rainfalls has yet to solve drought problems in the central region, it has revived farming in the Northeast. In Khon Kaen, local farmers are taking advantage of recent cloudbursts by speeding up their prolonged rice cultivation. In Ubon Ratchathani, thunder showers have lifted the water level in the Mekong River by two meters.

Despite the rainfalls, provincial governors in the Northeast have asked residents to continue to conserve water.
