BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai revealed his support for a ceasefire proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump, but emphasized that Thailand wishes to see genuine commitment from Cambodia before moving forward. He also called for urgent bilateral dialogue.
Mr. Phumtham, who is also Minister of the Interior and currently acting as Prime Minister, shared the update via his official Facebook page, Phumtham Wechayachai, on Sunday (July 27). He stated that he had a phone conversation with President Trump, who proposed an immediate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia to halt the ongoing conflict along the border.
Thailand, he said, expressed its gratitude for the concern and goodwill from the United States and confirmed that “in principle, Thailand agrees to a ceasefire.” However, he noted that Thailand still “wants to see a genuine intention from the Cambodian side” regarding the proposal.
To this end, Mr. Phumtham requested that the United States help communicate Thailand’s position to Cambodia and proposed that both sides enter into bilateral talks as soon as possible. He stressed the need for Cambodia to demonstrate seriousness and sincerity, so that both nations can jointly establish clear measures and procedures for a ceasefire. The aim is to create a foundation for a peaceful and lasting resolution to the dispute.
The phone conversation occurred amid mounting international efforts to mediate the Thai–Cambodian border conflict, which has severely affected citizens on both sides in recent weeks.
In his official Facebook post, Mr. Phumtham wrote:
“A few moments ago, I had a conversation with President Donald Trump of the United States. He proposed that Thailand and Cambodia implement an immediate ceasefire. I expressed gratitude for the concern and goodwill from the U.S. side, and confirmed that in principle, Thailand agrees to a ceasefire.
However, Thailand wishes to see sincere intention from the Cambodian side. I asked the U.S. to help convey to Cambodia that Thailand seeks to engage in bilateral dialogue as soon as possible. Cambodia must show seriousness and sincerity so that together we can establish clear steps for a ceasefire and work toward a peaceful and sustainable resolution.”
This statement comes as diplomatic pressure mounts to de-escalate the situation and protect lives along the contested border. (TNA)
