CHIANG MAI, Thailand – Chiang Mai province has set a new Guinness World Record for the largest performance of “Fawn Leb,” a traditional Northern Thai fingernail dance, with 7,218 dancers participating in a synchronized display of cultural heritage. The event took place on April 18 to celebrate the 729th anniversary of the city’s founding.

Held at the Three Kings Monument in the capital district, the performance drew thousands of spectators and included nearly 10,000 dancers gathering in the surrounding area. The streets around the inner moat were transformed into an open-air stage as dancers from across the province came together in traditional attire to perform the intricate dance.

Chiang Mai province organized the event in collaboration with the Chiang Mai Women’s Association and various community groups. Cultural officials, including Minister of Culture Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol and Chiang Mai Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn , were present as witnesses. The dance pays homage to traditions from the royal household of Princess Dara Rasmi, a figure deeply connected to Lanna history.

To qualify for the Guinness World Record, all participants were required to execute the approved choreography in unison, meeting strict timing and movement criteria. After a verification process, the Guinness World Records committee confirmed that Chiang Mai had surpassed the previous record of 5,255 participants.

A certificate was later presented to Chiang Mai province in recognition of the achievement. The event brought international attention to the enduring beauty of Thai traditional arts through a large-scale expression of community participation and cultural identity. (NNT)
