Cabinet approves Northeast railway extension project

BANGKOK, 10 May 2015 – The cabinet has approved a double track railway extension in the northeastern region. Construction is expected to begin in the middle of this year.

Deputy Spokesperson of the PM’s Office Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd disclosed that the cabinet had assigned the State Railway of Thailand to carry out the construction of a 187-kilometer double track railway extending from Nakhon Ratchasima province to Khon Kaen province.

The project is expected to require a budget of 26 billion baht and take four years. The route will include 19 train stations and three cargo stations. Aside from the new dual track railway, fences will be built along the rail route for safety reasons.

The construction is scheduled to start in the middle of this year. The new track should be serviceable in 2018. The number of passengers is estimated at 27,200-38,800 daily. The service should enable the transportation of goods amounting to 11,300 tons per day.
