Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul speaks at a joint press conference on January 6, alongside senior security and foreign affairs officials, following a mortar explosion near Hill 469 in Ubon Ratchathani that injured a Thai soldier, as authorities affirm the Thai–Cambodian border remains under control.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said today (Jan 6) that Cambodia has claimed that a mortar round that landed in Thai territory was fired accidentally, while Thailand has made clear that responsibility must still be addressed. The premier, however, affirmed that the situation along the Thai–Cambodian border remains under control and does not require civilian evacuation at this stage.

Anutin spoke at a joint press conference with the foreign minister, defense minister, and the secretary-general of the National Security Council following an explosion near Hill 469 in Nam Yuen district, Ubon Ratchathani province, which injured one Thai soldier. He said the government is receiving continuous updates on the situation.

PM Anutin stated that all relevant agencies have acted in line with procedures under the existing memorandum of understanding. Thai military and security agencies have submitted formal protests to Cambodian counterparts seeking clarification, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent an official letter stating that the incident violated the ceasefire agreement and requesting a diplomatic response.

Anutin said the projectile fell within Thai territory and that Thailand has completed all necessary preparations. While no decision has been made on retaliation or the application of rules of engagement, any response will be based on Thailand’s own sovereign assessment once reviews are complete.

The Interior Ministry has since instructed local authorities to care for residents in the affected area, adding that conditions remain stable and are being closely monitored. (NNT)
