Officials prepare to demolish the new Samsen Police Station in Bangkok after structural assessments reveal tilting and cracks, despite earlier attempts to stabilize the building with sand and temporary supports.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Officials are preparing to demolish the new Samsen Police Station building after a recent site assessment revealed increased cracks and noticeable tilting, raising safety concerns for future use.

Reporters noted that the building was affected by subsidence along the adjacent road, exposing foundation piles reaching approximately 25 meters deep. Although authorities attempted to stabilize the structure by filling sand beneath the building, the foundation could not be fully restored.

On October 2, officials added roughly 1,300 cubic meters of sand, bringing the total to nearly 4,000 cubic meters, or about five meters in height. Efforts focused on inspecting the building’s structural integrity.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has not yet disclosed specific plans. He intends to conduct a joint inspection with all relevant agencies before making a final decision and will provide details about the reasons for potential demolition.

Previously, temporary supports, including three short piles, were installed, and some original piles were removed. Cameras were also set up to monitor building movement. While no significant shifts were initially observed, two days later minor tremors and cracks appeared in the underground parking area. Despite earlier assurances that demolition was unnecessary, the building is now deemed unsafe for use. A joint meeting confirmed the need for demolition, with the governor concurring. (TNA)
