BANGKOK, Thailand – As Songkran approaches, the government has called on all citizens to help promote Thailand’s cultural heritage and elevate the festival to global recognition. The aim is to foster national pride and generate tourism revenue, while preserving traditional values. Citizens are urged to behave appropriately, particularly in terms of dress and online behavior, to prevent acts of public indecency during the festivities.
Authorities have specifically warned against wearing revealing clothing during water-related activities and sharing explicit images or videos online. Those who post or share such content may face prosecution under the Computer Crime Act, which carries penalties of up to five years in prison, a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both. Individuals appearing in these images or videos could also face charges for committing acts of public indecency.
In addition, those who post content encouraging the consumption of alcoholic beverages may be charged under the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, which prescribes penalties of up to one year in prison, a fine of up to 500,000 baht, or both. Any inappropriate online content or live streams that violate public morals or legal standards will also be subject to prosecution.
The government has requested public cooperation in monitoring questionable behavior and has instructed relevant agencies to intensify online surveillance during the holiday period. These measures aim to deter copycat behavior and ensure that Songkran remains a dignified cultural celebration rooted in Thai tradition. (NNT)
