Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul says Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim relayed President Trump’s support for Thailand’s stance on humanitarian demining — and confirmed that US–Thai tariff negotiations remain unaffected.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has provided an update on recent diplomatic engagements, stating that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who currently serves as ASEAN Chair, contacted him once again on November 15, 2025, to convey further developments regarding regional security and bilateral discussions with the United States.

Prime Minister Anwar informed the Thai Premier that he had held another discussion with US President Donald Trump following their earlier exchanges. During that conversation, President Trump agreed with Thailand’s position that Humanitarian demining is a critical issue outlined in the joint declaration signed between Thailand and Cambodia. The U.S. President urged the Thai government to accelerate demining operations as quickly as possible, noting the serious risk landmines pose to the lives of people in both countries.

Anwar also conveyed President Trump’s assurance that the United States would not link Thailand’s suspension of the declaration to the ongoing negotiations on US–Thai trade tariffs. This clarification was delivered to Prime Minister Anutin to ensure diplomatic clarity amid public concern.

Anutin added that he had asked Prime Minister Anwar whether he could publicly share this update, to which Anwar responded affirmatively, indicating that he would also provide corresponding confirmation through his own communication channels.

The Prime Minister said he released the update to provide clarity and reassure the public. He noted that the letter from the Office of the United States Trade Representative, which referenced a temporary suspension of negotiations with Thailand, was finalized before his call with President Trump on the evening of November 14. He emphasized that the information he has now shared represents the most up-to-date understanding of the situation. (NNT)
