BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has directed government agencies to prepare for potential PM2.5 air pollution, tighten controls on illegal hazardous waste imports, and advance Thailand’s efforts to join the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Government Spokesperson Ekkapop Phianphiset announced the directives on October 20, confirming preparations for an OECD leadership visit on November 23. An advance delegation is expected to assess Thailand’s readiness for membership, and relevant agencies have been instructed to ensure the country is prepared for the evaluation.
To address air pollution, the Prime Minister instructed deputy prime ministers, ministers, and provincial governors to develop preventive measures ahead of possible increases in PM2.5 levels. Authorities have been directed to coordinate their efforts and remain ready, amid concerns that particulate pollution could affect neighboring countries.
The government is also increasing inspections to prevent hazardous waste, especially electronic waste, from entering Thailand illegally. The Customs Department has been ordered to closely examine suspicious ships and cargo containers, while Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun will lead discussions on addressing unlawful waste-processing facilities.
