I was privileged to catch up with Aussie Sir Norman Cheetham this week after his magnificent win at Phoenix on Tuesday.  The former self made millionaire informed me that all the money was now gone and he was on his uppers and was now resorting to winning golf competitions and entering ‘Best Dressed Aussie’ competitions to make ends meet.

Monday, Sept. 26, The Emerald – Stableford

The TRGG got the golfing week underway on Monday with a trip over to Emerald.  A new name appeared at the top of the leaderboard and I must admit I do not have any info about our venerable winner.  Gerry Graham is his name and his 37 points was good enough to win first prize, so well done Gerry.

Aussie Daryl Ottaway came home in second place on 35pts and Teacher Richard Talbot got his sums right to finish in third place.

1st Gerry Graham (28) 37pts

2nd Daryl Ottaway (8) 35pts

3rd Richard Talbot (16) 33pts

Tuesday, Sept. 27, Phoenix Gold – Stableford

Under threatening skies on Tuesday we headed over to Phoenix (Lake and Ocean course).  What more can I say about our winner that hasn’t already been said?  According to Norm he is still playing off the wrong handicap, which he believes should be much higher and he will moan until the cows come home about how badly he is being treated by the handicap committee.  After rattling off 39 points off his 14 handicap his complaints were put on the back burner for a day or two.

The elegantly attired David Hutchinson just managed to take second place from the stylishly named Rusty Barfield, but only after a count back when they both finished on 37 points.

1st Norman Cheetham (14) 39pts

2nd David Hutchinson (1) 37pts

3rd Rusty Barfield (6) 37pts

Wednesday, Sept. 28, Greenwood – Stableford

On Wednesday the TRGG made the long drive over to Greenwood (B and C courses).  Stewart Booth was happy he made the effort by shooting 39 points and he returned home with pockets bulging with his winnings.

In second place, Billy Allan also had a good day and for the first time in a long while managed to better his handicap.  It has been sad to witness the demise of this once steady golfer but at Greenwood he was able to wipe away the tears and stand next to the winner with his held high.

John Gouge, back with us for the first time since February, quickly got back into the swing of things by taking third place.

1st Stewart Booth (9) 39pts

2nd Billy Allan (19) 37pts

3rd John Gouge (9) 35pts

Thursday, Sept. 29, Green Valley – Stableford

It was once again back to Green Valley for our usual Thursday outing and for the first time in a while two divisions/flights were necessary.

In Division 1 it was Jim Groves who kept things on the straight and narrow and amassed an impressive 39 points to take first place.  Daryl Ottaway finished two shots behind in second place, with our mystery guest Seil Peter taking over third spot.

In Division 2 big John O’Donoghue had another good day and only needed a moderate 33 points to take the yellow jersey.  Wor Geordie Brendan Abbott was second and Arthur Kimo took third place after finishing on just 28 points.

Friday, Sept. 30, Burapha – Stableford

The TRGG rounded off the week and the month on Friday with a visit to Burapha (C and D courses).  Again two divisions was the order of the day and in Division 1 Scotsman Alan Murray ate up all of his porridge and notched up 40 points to take the honours.  Damian Burton finished four shots behind in second place and Al Marmoto came home third.

In Division 2 Billy Allan finished with a smile on his face for the second time this week and definitely seems to have got his form back.  His 38 points was far too good for Brendon Abbot in second place on 35 and Hiro Tauchi in third on 33.
