PATTAYA, Thailand – Local officials and police in Pattaya carried out an early-morning undercover operation to arrest a group of gamblers illegally playing dice (hi-lo) on the beach.
The operation took place at around 6 a.m. on April 4, when Banglamung district officers, together with police, moved in on a group gathered along Pattaya Beach near Soi 13. Authorities arrested four individuals and seized gambling equipment, including dice, a bowl and cover, a score sheet, and a quantity of cash.
The raid followed complaints from tourists who reported that the group had been openly gambling while pretending to be regular beachgoers, sitting on mats and blending in with visitors without concern for the law.
To catch the suspects, officers went undercover as tourists, sitting nearby and pretending to fish while observing the group. Officials said the gamblers had lookouts watching the surroundings, making the operation more difficult. However, once the group became relaxed, officers signaled backup teams to move in.
Some suspects attempted to flee barefoot across the sand after recognizing the officers, but four were successfully apprehended at the scene.
One of the alleged operators told authorities the group chose the beach because it offered a wide, open view in all directions and a quiet atmosphere, making it easier to spot approaching officers. They claimed the gatherings were meant to “pass the time,” though officials stressed the activity was illegal.
All suspects, along with the seized items, were taken to Banglamung district authorities and handed over to investigators for legal proceedings.
