Traffic slows to a crawl along Sukhumvit Road inbound to Pattaya between Makro South Pattaya and Thepprasit Intersection as the city faces an early surge of vehicles ahead of the high season and the upcoming Pattaya International Fireworks Festival.

PATTAYA, Thailand – The influx of vehicles heading into Pattaya has already begun weeks ahead of the official tourism high season, with long traffic jams reported along Sukhumvit Road inbound to the city.

On Tuesday evening, traffic was backed up for several kilometers from Makro South Pattaya to the Thepprasit Intersection — a stretch that often becomes a bottleneck during weekends and holidays. Vehicles moved at a crawl as tourists, workers, and delivery trucks converged on the route leading toward the heart of the city.

Local motorists and taxi drivers said the situation has worsened in recent days as more visitors arrive from Bangkok and nearby provinces for short holidays. In many cases, the slowdowns can stem from anything — extended red lights at intersections, minor accidents, police checkpoints, or ongoing roadwork — all of which add to the growing influx of traffic.

With the cool season approaching, hotels and attractions across Pattaya are reporting an increase in bookings. City officials warn that congestion is expected to intensify later this month, particularly from November 28–29, when the Pattaya International Fireworks Festival 2025 takes place. The event, which draws tens of thousands of spectators to the beachfront, will see several roads temporarily closed for public safety and pedestrian access.

Residents and long-term visitors are advised to plan their travel routes carefully, avoid beachside areas during festival nights, and use public transport or motorcycles where possible.

Despite ongoing infrastructure improvements, Pattaya’s rapid growth continues to outpace its road capacity. Locals have voiced concern that there are “no more roads left to cater” to the city’s expanding tourism and residential developments — a challenge authorities will need to confront as the festive season begins.
