PATTAYA, Thailand – Pattaya Tourism Police are stepping up security preparations ahead of the arrival of more than 5,000 US Navy personnel expected to visit Pattaya and Chonburi during a US naval port call from September 2–6.
Two US warships are expected to dock around Laem Chabang and Si Racha during the visit. Some of the personnel are expected to come ashore in Pattaya for recreation and tourism. Pol. Lt. Col. Prabda Suksuntree, chief of Pattaya Tourist Police Station, said officers had received preliminary information through coordination with the US Embassy and were instructed by the Tourist Police commander to prepare for the expected influx.
Measures include closer coordination with the embassy, increased patrols and investigation teams, and cooperation with local police and other agencies to prevent incidents and maintain safety.
Tourist police officers with foreign-language skills will also be on standby to assist US personnel and other visitors, provide information and help with tourism-related needs around Pattaya and Chonburi.
Officers will also promote the Tourist Police application, which allows visitors to request assistance, report incidents and access information on tourist attractions and accommodation. The Tourist Police hotline 1155 is available around the clock. Pattaya Tourism Police said major tourist areas, including Pattaya Beach and Walking Street, will receive particular attention during the visit.
A mobile police unit, smart-camera technology and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) will be deployed to support surveillance and security operations, particularly in Walking Street and other areas expected to attract large numbers of visitors.
The security operation will be coordinated with Pattaya City Police, Chonburi Immigration, Pattaya City and other relevant agencies throughout the September 2–6 period. The preparations come alongside Chonburi Governor Naris Niramaiwong’s call for local businesses to act as good hosts, keep prices fair and provide courteous service to the visiting US personnel.
