Labor Minister Julapun Amornvivat says Thailand will propose a one-year extension of work permits for workers from Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam to meet labor demand and support the business sector.

PATTAYA, Thailand – Thailand’s Ministry of Labor is preparing to propose a one-year extension of work permits for migrant workers from Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam in a move aimed at addressing labor shortages and supporting business operations nationwide. Labor Minister Julapun Amornvivat chaired the 3/2569 meeting of the Committee on the Management of Foreign Workers, attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Labor and representatives from relevant agencies including the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Public Health, Internal Security Operations Command, the National Security Council, and the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

Following the meeting at the Department of Employment in Bangkok, Julapun said the proposal is designed to ensure an adequate labor supply to meet business demand and prevent workforce shortages that could affect employers, enterprises, and the overall economy.

The committee approved in principle the extension of work permits for migrant workers from Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam in line with a Cabinet resolution dated November 11, 2025. Under the proposal, workers currently permitted to work until December 11, 2026 would be allowed to stay and work in Thailand for an additional one year until December 11, 2027, subject to conditions set by the Department of Employment.

Julapun stressed that the Ministry of Labor and relevant agencies will implement the process carefully and ensure clear communication to all stakeholders. Department of Employment Director-General Somchai Morakotsriwan said the proposal will now be submitted to the Cabinet for consideration. The extension will only take effect after Cabinet approval and once related ministerial regulations are officially enforced. He added that employers and migrant workers eligible under the scheme should closely follow official announcements via the Department of Employment website or local employment offices nationwide, as well as the Labor Ministry hotline 1506 (press 2), for further updates.
