PATTAYA, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister of Interior Phumtham Wechayachai has reiterated that the decision to allow poker as a sport in Thailand remains unchanged, emphasizing that the existing principles and procedures still apply. The approval process continues to lie with provincial governors and the Department of Provincial Administration, who must grant authorization for competitions.
Speaking ahead of Anutin Charnvirakul’s upcoming role as Minister of Interior, Phumtham urged the new minister not to focus on minor issues regarding poker legalization, which is now recognized as an international sport and potentially part of Olympic events. Instead, he suggested attention be given to more pressing matters, including the restitution of the Khao Kradong land, corruption among senators, and drug-related issues.
Phumtham also addressed concerns regarding Khao Kradong land, asserting it must return to state ownership, and highlighted ongoing scrutiny of potential interference by the Election Commission (EC) in high-profile cases. He questioned whether obstacles could arise from administrative details, emphasizing that the government aims to resolve major national issues promptly and fairly.
