BANGKOK, Thailand – Thai police have identified the driver of a white sedan who allegedly fled a police checkpoint while intoxicated before crashing into a motorcycle delivery rider and speeding away from the scene. Authorities have vowed to pursue the case vigorously. The incident occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m. on July 21 after traffic police set up a checkpoint on Rama IV Road in Bangkok as part of routine enforcement aimed at reducing road accidents and preventing crime. According to police, officers stopped the white sedan and conducted a breath alcohol test, which allegedly showed the driver had a blood alcohol level well above the legal limit. Instead of complying with officers’ instructions to park the vehicle and cease driving, the driver reportedly accelerated away from the checkpoint.
Moments later, the fleeing vehicle struck a delivery rider who had parked his motorcycle outside a noodle shop near the Kluaynamthai intersection on Rama IV Road while collecting a customer order. The impact threw the rider to the ground, causing injuries and extensive damage to the motorcycle. The sedan then fled the scene. Security camera footage of the crash, released by a local community page, captured the dramatic collision and the driver’s escape. Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong Phiwphan, Deputy Inspector General of the Royal Thai Police and police spokesperson, said the injured rider has already filed a complaint with Thonglor Police Station. Investigators have identified the suspect and are working to locate and arrest the driver.
He said the superintendent of Thonglor Police Station has been instructed to pursue the case strictly, including charges related to drunk driving, evading arrest, and any individuals found to have assisted the suspect in avoiding prosecution. The Royal Thai Police emphasized that checkpoints are an essential proactive measure to improve road safety and combat crime. Authorities urged motorists to cooperate with officers at checkpoints and obey traffic laws, stressing that such operations have led to numerous arrests in serious criminal cases while helping prevent road accidents.
