PATTAYA, Thailand – As temperatures rise across Thailand, the country’s famous New Year water festival is fast approaching, offering what many visitors consider the most fun way to beat the heat. During Songkran, streets across the country transform into giant splash zones where locals and tourists cool off with water guns, buckets and hoses in a non-stop celebration.
In the seaside city of Pattaya, the festivities continue even longer than in most parts of the country. While the main Songkran holiday is celebrated nationwide from April 13–15, Pattaya’s famous Wan Lai celebrations keep the party going for several more days.
The highlight comes with Wan Lai Naklua on April 18 and Wan Lai Pattaya on April 19, when thousands of people pour into the streets for what many describe as one of the biggest water fights in Thailand.
During Wan Lai, the city becomes a moving river of people dressed in swimming trunks, colorful shirts and waterproof gear. Pickup trucks packed with giant water barrels cruise slowly along beach roads while passengers scoop water into buckets or pump high-powered water guns at anyone within range.

Beach Road, Second Road and many surrounding streets become packed with smiling crowds, music and a continuous spray of water from every direction. For hours at a time, traffic slows to a crawl as revelers splash each other from sidewalks, motorcycles and truck beds.
For tourists, joining the celebration is simple. Put on a light shirt, grab a water gun from one of the many street vendors and prepare to get soaked within seconds. No one stays dry for long.
Locals often say Wan Lai in Pattaya is one of the best ways to experience Songkran because the celebration feels less rushed and more festive than in some larger cities. Families, long-term visitors and tourists mingle freely in the streets as the tropical heat becomes part of the fun rather than something to escape from.
The water fights may look chaotic, but they are rooted in the tradition of gently pouring water to symbolize cleansing and renewal at the start of the Thai New Year.

Today the custom has evolved into a joyful national party that draws millions of visitors every year.
For those visiting Pattaya in April, the message is simple: bring your swimming trunks, protect your phone and be ready for a day where the streets turn into one giant water playground.
Once Wan Lai begins, the splashing rarely stops.
