BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s benchmark stock index closed higher on Friday, outperforming most regional markets despite profit-taking in technology shares, as buying in power, energy, and defensive stocks helped lift sentiment. The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index ended at 1,639.04 points, up 3.75 points (0.23%), with trading turnover reaching 91.8 billion baht. The index traded mostly in positive territory throughout the session, reaching an intraday high of 1,639.87 and a low of 1,628.60. A total of 215 stocks advanced, while 252 declined and 191 remained unchanged.
Apichart Phubanjerdkul, CISA, Senior Director of Strategic Analysis at TISCO Securities, said the Thai market showed greater resilience than its regional peers even as electronics shares came under pressure from profit-taking that mirrored weakness in global technology stocks. He said investors rotated into defensive and value stocks, with GULF leading gains among power producers. Energy stocks also attracted buying as oil prices remained at relatively high levels. Bank shares continued to perform well, although investors may become more cautious ahead of second-quarter 2026 earnings announcements scheduled for early next week.
Looking ahead, Apichart expects the market’s recent momentum to moderate as investors focus on bank earnings and geopolitical developments in the Middle East. He noted renewed tensions after U.S. President Donald Trump warned of possible military action against Iran if nuclear negotiations do not resume, with Tehran responding in kind. TISCO Securities expects the SET Index to face resistance between 1,650 and 1,660 points, with support around 1,610 points.
