Pattaya braces for heavy rain this weekend as Thailand monitors a potential tropical storm forming in the South China Sea.

PATTAYA, Thailand – Thailand is expected to see increased rainfall from August 22 to September 1, with showers spreading across most regions and heavy rain possible in some areas, according to the Meteorological Department. Authorities are closely monitoring a low-pressure system in the South China Sea that could intensify into a tropical storm.

Somkuan Tonjan, Director of the Weather Forecasting Division, said that from August 22–24, rainfall will rise due to the southwest monsoon and a monsoon trough passing across the country. At the same time, a low-pressure area is forming in the central South China Sea, which may strengthen as it moves toward northern Vietnam. If the system continues to develop, it could become a tropical cyclone, although its path and intensity remain uncertain.

From August 24–27, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in northern and upper northeastern provinces, raising the risk of flash floods and landslides. Showers are likely to continue into early September.

Residents in affected areas, particularly in the north and northeast, are advised to monitor accumulated rainfall that could trigger sudden flooding or debris flows. Travelers should take care on slippery roads, and outdoor event organizers are urged to prepare tents, umbrellas, and other rain protection. Farmers are encouraged to plan for water management, including drainage in flooded areas and water storage in drier zones, in anticipation of lower rainfall in early September.
