Mayor Poramet says Pattaya’s floods are mostly temporary with water levels returning to normal within two to three hours due to ongoing drainage improvements.

PATTAYA, Thailand – Mayor Poramet Ngampichet said the city is actively addressing flooding issues, noting that most incidents are “temporary water accumulation” during heavy rain. Typically, water levels return to normal within 2–3 hours.

The city’s drainage system can handle around 70 cubic meters per hour. Continuous rain exceeding one hour may cause short-term flooding in some areas, but water recedes quickly. Pattaya has implemented ongoing flood mitigation projects, including strategic drainage pipelines from Nong Prue Municipality to the railway road. Phase 1 of the project is complete, while Phase 2 is underway, which will enhance water flow from Khao Talo. Additional drainage work is in progress along Thepprasit Soi 9 and Jomtien Beach Road.

While a large-scale flood solution would require over 35 billion baht, the city has invested more than 2 billion baht of its own budget to improve drainage and reduce prolonged flooding.

Mayor Poramet also urged residents and tourists to monitor traffic and flood updates via the online “LINE@PATTAYA CONNECT” system and to avoid driving through flooded streets to prevent property damage. Traffic management teams are deployed in recurrent flood areas to assist motorists safely.

Pattaya strengthens drainage and traffic management to keep streets safer for residents and tourists during heavy rain.
