PATTAYA, Thailand – If you’re looking forward to a cold beer, sunset cocktail, or evening glass of wine in Pattaya or Bangkok this Sunday, you’ll just need a little patience. The temporary election-related ban on alcohol sales remains in effect until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, after which restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, supermarkets, convenience stores, and other licensed businesses can resume normal alcohol sales and service.
The restriction was imposed by the Election Commission (EC) in connection with local elections taking place in Bangkok and Pattaya. The measure, which began at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, is intended to support a peaceful voting environment and maintain public order during the election process. For visitors who arrived in Pattaya expecting a lively weekend atmosphere, the temporary ban may have come as a surprise. However, the wait is short. Once the clock strikes 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, the city’s bars, pubs, restaurants, beach venues, and entertainment districts can once again serve alcoholic beverages.
Election officials are encouraging eligible voters to cast their ballots before enjoying their Sunday evening plans. Polling stations are open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., allowing authorities time to conclude voting operations before the alcohol restriction is lifted one hour later. Businesses have largely complied with the order, as penalties for violations can include up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both. For tourists, long-term visitors, and residents, the message is simple: hold your horses for a few more hours. Pattaya’s nightlife isn’t going anywhere, and normal service will resume across the city after 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening.
