SAKON NAKHON, Thailand – A health clinic director in northeastern Thailand has been temporarily transferred pending an official investigation after photographs circulating online appeared to show him drinking beer while providing medical care to an elderly patient. The incident sparked widespread criticism on social media after images emerged allegedly showing the director of a local Health Promoting Hospital in Kham Bong sub-district, Waritchaphum district, holding and consuming an alcoholic beverage while drawing blood and checking the blood pressure of an 83-year-old woman.
The photographs quickly drew public attention, with many questioning the appropriateness of consuming alcohol during official working hours and while carrying out medical duties. In response, Sakon Nakhon Provincial Administrative Organization officials launched an investigation on June 16 to establish the facts surrounding the incident. Kittana Tharakittirat, Permanent Secretary of the Sakon Nakhon Provincial Administrative Organization, said local administrators had already assigned public health officials and representatives from the Health Promoting Hospital network to conduct a preliminary inquiry. As an initial measure, the clinic director has been ordered to temporarily assist at another government office while the investigation is carried out. Officials said the transfer was intended to prevent any impact on public services and ensure a fair and transparent review process.
Authorities described the alleged behavior as highly inappropriate for a public health official entrusted with caring for members of the public. A formal fact-finding committee is expected to be established to determine whether disciplinary action is warranted under civil service regulations.
Officials said the images appear likely to depict a real incident, although the investigation will seek to verify all circumstances before any final decision is made. The case has reignited discussion in Thailand about professional conduct within the public healthcare system and the standards expected of government employees while on duty.
