NONG KHAI, Thailand – Two counterfeit 1,000-baht banknotes were discovered after an ATM rejected them when a customer attempted to deposit about 200,000 baht into his bank account at a department store in Nong Khai on October 7. Bank staff inspected the two notes and found that they closely resembled genuine currency in color and design, including watermarks and security strips. However, the paper felt different and had a rough texture resembling a color photocopy, confirming that the notes were counterfeit.
The bank confiscated the notes and will forward them to the Bank of Thailand for further examination. The customer told staff that the money had come from neighboring Laos and agreed to hand over the counterfeit notes. Bank officials warned people to be cautious when accepting banknotes from unknown sources and to report suspected counterfeit currency to authorities immediately.
