PATTAYA, Thailand – A chilling reminder of the dangers of distracted walking unfolded in Pattaya this week, after a 42-year-old man from Nakhon Ratchasima was left critically injured while crossing the road while talking on his phone.

The accident occurred on Road 331 in the Khao Mai Kaew area, East Pattaya, Banglamung district. According to police and CCTV footage, the man was engrossed in a phone conversation and stepped into the street without checking for oncoming traffic. A six-wheeled truck traveling at speed struck him directly. Despite the driver’s attempt to brake and honk in warning, it was too late.

Rescue workers rushed to the scene and quickly transported the victim to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The incident has since sparked widespread reaction online, with Thai netizens weighing in on the recklessness of the act and the cost of ignoring road safety.

“We shouldn’t be doing anything else while crossing a road,” one comment read.
“You escaped cars, but not trucks.”
Others were less sympathetic: “If not crazy, then drunk — unbelievable,” said one user. Another added sarcastically: “No problem, hit reset and try again next life.”

A more reflective comment pointed out:
“It’s clear he lost awareness — focused on the phone, looking at the opposite side of the road, forgot to check the traffic on his own side.”

As Thailand pushes to improve pedestrian safety in tourist areas like Pattaya, authorities are again urging residents and visitors alike: do not use your phone while crossing the street. Look both ways, stay alert, and never assume the road is clear — because one distracted moment can change everything.
