Cremation ceremony held for former Sutthawat Temple abbot

Former Culture Minister Sonthaya Kunplome presided over the cremation ceremony at the end of 90 days since the death of Phra Khru Wichitthammasarn, abbot of Sutthawat Temple in Nongprue.

Other guests at the May 29 ceremony included former and current district and provincial officials, former MPs, Nongprue council members and educators.

The former Religious Committee chairman died on Feb. 18 in his sleep. He had been an ordained monk for 59 years. His funeral lasted until Feb. 28, after which he lay in state until the auspicious time for his cremation, which took place May 29.

In the morning, food and alms offerings were held with 79 monks present. A hundred monks received robes in the “pha pa” ceremony.

The cremation ceremony began at 4 p.m. There were performances of dancers, Thai arts and performers dressed up in Ramayana-style attire. Many of his followers and the general public attended to pay respect and express their sadness.
