Two jail inmates are back behind bars after a failed escape attempt at Pattaya Provincial Court.

Kaseam Wongcharoen, 30, and Prawee Kasena, 30, were apprehended shortly after making a break for it from the second-floor restroom of the Jomtien Beach courthouse Nov. 25.

Pol. Sen. Sgt. Maj. Somboon Srikamkit, who was guarding the pair, was knocked unconscious and stripped of his uniform in the attempt. The 46-year-old officer was treated for his injuries at a local hospital.

Security guard Somporn Samutkiri said the incident began while Somboon was taking the two men charged with rape, weapons and drug charges to a hearing. They asked to use the restroom and, while there, they overpowered the officer, slamming his head into the wall until he fell unconscious.

One suspect took the officer’s uniform and tried to escape, but courthouse guards noticed the “cop” was wearing ankle shackles. In a last-ditch attempt to flee, Kaseam jumped out a second-story window, badly spraining his ankle.

Both men were taken back to their cells and have been slapped with additional charges for the attack on the police officer and attempted escape.
