PATTAYA, Thailand – The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) to jointly develop an international sports center — a major “Sports Complex” spanning 1,500 rai (approx. 600 acres) in Banglamung District, Chonburi. The development will be part of the ambitious EECiti smart city project, envisioned as one of the world’s top 10 livable cities by 2037.
Chula Sukmanop, Secretary-General of the EEC Policy Committee, signed the MOU with Kongsak Yodmanee, Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand. The project aims to transform the area into a global hub for sports training and competition that meets international federation standards.
The complex will support Thailand’s bids to host major international sporting events and serve as a driver for professional sports development and economic value creation within the sports industry. It will feature not only world-class stadiums and training facilities but also multi-purpose venues suitable for large-scale festivals, concerts, and public events.
Additionally, the project includes sports rehabilitation and performance center, and a global-level sports science innovation hub, offering comprehensive athletic services.
Chula emphasized that this collaboration marks the beginning of integrated efforts between the EEC and SAT to raise the standard of urban development. The project will enhance sports infrastructure, green spaces, and environmental sustainability, enabling Thailand to host global mega-events and attract key investment in target industries.
As part of the EECiti smart city vision, which spans over 15,000 rai, the broader plan includes green industrial development in collaboration with the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand. The city aims to accommodate 350,000 residents, create 200,000 jobs within a decade, and serve as a showcase for sustainable, eco-friendly urban innovation and circular economy investment within the EEC.
