ROIED, 23 April 2011 -Natural Resources and Environment Minister Mr. Suwit Khunkitti has presided over the seminar in Roi Et province with an objective to tackle the water shortage crisis in the Northeastern region. Over 1,000 farmers and local residents have participated in this event.

According to Mr. Suwit, the agenda included in the seminar consist of indentifying communities which are relying on water resources for farming before mapping out water systems in each of these areas. This approach is said to help reduce competition among residents for water. It will also help create more jobs and eventually get them out of debts.

Roi Et Governor Somsak Khamtaweeprom said his province was facing natural resource issues particularly the quality of soil unsuitable for growing crops. Meanwhile, the lack of efficient water management has led to water in Mun, Chi, Yang, Siao Rivers to overflow and flooding the surrounding communities, on the other hand, there is insufficient water for irrigation during the dry season.
