Thailand and Cambodia to discuss joint development on economy and transportation

BANGKOK, 7 June 2013 –Thailand and Cambodia look set to establish an economic zone and transportation routes linking the two countries. 

According to Mr. Damrong Kraikruan, Director-General of the East Asian Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand has submitted the outline of topics to be discussed at the first meeting of the Joint Committee on Border Development between Thailand and Cambodia next week.

The 1st JCBD meeting will be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from June 10th- 11th. According to the Director-General, the discussion will be centered on development of border economic zones, for which both sides have eyed two major sites. The first one is the area adjoining Aranyaprathet district, Sa Keo Province and Cambodia’s Poi Pet. The other is in Sihanouk Ville deep seaport of Cambodia.

The Director General said the two sides will have to develop transport routes and public infrastructure to promote energy and public safety while solving such problems as human trafficking and public health and improving language skills of their citizens.
