BANGKOK, 11 April 2014  – Motorcycle Taxi operators charging fares unfairly during the long Songkran holiday are subject to fine, said Department of Land Transport Director General Atsatai Rattanadilok Na Phuket.

Officials will step up their inspections against violators especially motorcycle taxi operators at major bus terminals like Morchit, the South Terminal and Ekamai, and also motorcycle taxi queues at the Victory Monument and various BTS & MRT stations. The effort follows numerous complaints of unusually high fare prices charged by the operators as the long holiday kicked off, Mr. Atsatai said.

He cited as an example a fare rise at Morchit Bus Terminal which was twice as high as the normal rate during this period. He said opportunists are subjected to a fine of no more than 5,000 baht.

Mr. Atsatai also urged passengers to report unfair hikes of prices at Hotline 1584. Passengers are also urged to report on rogue operators using inappropriate license plates or regular taxi drivers who refuse to use fare meters.
