CHIANG MAI, Thailand – Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai drew crowds of tourists on October 14 despite dense fog reducing visibility to just 20 metres, with temperatures dropping to 12°C at Thailand’s highest peak and 14°C at the Kew Mae Pan viewpoint.

The car park at the viewpoint, located at kilometre 42 in Chom Thong district, was full before dawn as visitors arrived to experience the cool weather and mist drifting across the mountain. Although the thick fog obscured the surrounding scenery, tourists enjoyed the refreshing air and mist blowing against their faces. Hot drinks, rice porridge and steamed buns at welfare shops also proved popular in the chilly conditions.

Officials warned motorists driving up the mountain to ensure their vehicles were in good condition and that drivers were experienced in handling steep, winding roads. The final five kilometres before the summit feature particularly long stretches of steep bends. Drivers who smell burning brakes should pull over at a safe location and allow them to cool before continuing. On October 13, Doi Inthanon welcomed 3,216 visitors, including 2,527 Thai nationals and 689 foreigners, arriving in 935 vehicles.
