BANGKOK, Thailand – An electrical short circuit caused flames to break out along the railway tracks at Bangkok’s Tao Poon MRT station on September 20, temporarily halting services between Bang O and Kamphaeng Phet stations. The Rama 199 Fire and Rescue Centre received reports of the incident at around 12:30 p.m. at the station on Pracharat Sai 2 Road in Bang Sue district. Firefighters from Bang Pho Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the scene. By 12:43 p.m., crews had entered the station’s electrical control room and were using thermal imaging cameras and smoke extraction equipment to assess the situation. All passengers were evacuated from the affected area. The initial cause was reported as an electrical short circuit involving the power supply system.
MRTA Governor Kajphajon Udomdhamphakdi said moisture around the power supply rail was believed to have been higher than normal because of the rain, resulting in the short circuit. A detailed investigation is continuing. Bangkok Expressway and Metro (BEM), the MRT operator, said services were temporarily suspended between Bang O and Kamphaeng Phet stations, while passengers were advised to use nearby stations. Some services were delayed by about 60 minutes. Firefighters responded to an electrical short circuit at Tao Poon MRT station after rain reportedly caused excessive moisture around the power supply rail.
