BANGKOK, Thailand – Minister of Energy Akanat Promphan stated that high electricity prices are not caused by clean energy, but by expensive imported gas. He further explained that clean energy today is not only environmentally friendly but also cheaper than gas. He reminded the public that Thailand can produce its own gas, unlike oil, and imports only a small portion. With proper negotiation and well-managed contracts, the country can avoid adverse impacts when market prices surge due to a crisis. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain a balance by ensuring an adequate gas supply while accelerating the development of a smart grid system with forecasting capabilities.
Meanwhile, gas remains a viable transitional fuel, widely recognized globally as superior to coal in terms of carbon emissions, allowing the country to manage this interim period without hindering daily life, business operations, or economic growth. At the same resolute pace, Thailand continues to advance toward its net-zero emissions target, ensuring sustainability remains at the forefront as it meets shifting trade and regulatory standards in the modern and future global economy.
