NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand – A video of an elderly man riding an electric three-wheeler up a railway bridge in Nakhon Ratchasima has sparked concern among residents over the safety of elderly road users and the difficulty of navigating some community crossings. The photos and video were posted on the “Korat Ban Eung” Facebook news group on September 19, showing the elderly man riding the three-wheeled vehicle while carrying a walker as he made his way up the Thung Sawang railway overpass.
The post raised concerns that the vehicle could be difficult to control on the steep section, particularly if it had to stop or encountered other traffic. The footage quickly drew comments from people worried that an accident could have serious consequences. One commenter said electric three-wheelers and electric bicycles are regularly seen using the route, with about three vehicles frequently travelling through the area. The commenter also said one green three-wheeler is particularly well known among local residents for travelling a long distance toward Ban Pho Cho Ho.
Other residents, however, pointed out that some railway bridges crossing through communities offer few or no practical alternatives for local residents. One local resident said elderly people sometimes struggle to cycle up the bridges and have to get off and push their bicycles. Scrap collectors using pedal-powered three-wheelers can also be seen struggling to make the climb.
The comments highlighted a broader concern about accessibility and road safety for elderly residents and people using slower or less powerful vehicles. While the video has prompted calls for greater caution, residents also questioned how such crossings could be improved to make them safer and more accessible for everyone, particularly older people who may have limited mobility and no convenient alternative route.
