BANGKOK, Thailand – Traditional Southern Thai Samping Fabric in Contemporary Fashion
Nene Royal, a 16-year-old contestant from Phuket, Thailand, made history as the first Thai artist to earn a Golden Buzzer during the America’s Got Talent 2026 quarterfinals on 26 August 2026, advancing her straight to the finals.
By incorporating Samping – a traditional woven fabric from southern Thailand wrapped around her waist over pants – Nene presented a contemporary Thai aesthetic through her world-class rock performance, showcasing Thailand’s rich cultural capital to a global audience.
Samping refers to a traditional waist wrap, often made of Songket – a rich, handwoven fabric native to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand’s southern border provinces of Yala, Narathiwat, and Pattani, reflecting a long history of cultural exchange across the region. A defining feature of Samping is its intricate weaving techniques, using cotton or silk interwoven with metallic threads to create geometric, floral, or nature-inspired motifs that glitter under the light.
Traditionally worn over trousers or as a waist wrap by both men and women in lower southern Thailand, Samping was creatively styled by Nene, who draped it diagonally over dark dyed jeans to stunning effect. Today, Samping continues to adapt to the modern era. Beyond traditional ceremonies, it is tailored into contemporary fashion garments, stylish accessories, and bags, blending rich heritage with modern style to celebrate Thai cultural pride on the world stage.
