Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin orders legal action after officials find extensive coral damage near Ko Wang Tai off Koh Samui.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin has ordered legal action over damage to rocks and coral near Ko Wang Tai in Koh Samui district, Surat Thani province. The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) was directed to investigate reports that an excavator was used to alter the coastal area to create a passage for large vessels.

A joint inspection by marine, national park, forestry, police, and provincial authorities found evidence of excavation and damage to massive and staghorn corals. The affected area covered approximately 6,240 square meters.

Officials found a blue excavator about 55 meters from the affected site, along with track marks connecting the machine to the area. No one claimed ownership of the excavator, which was impounded as evidence. Authorities are gathering further information to identify those responsible and determine whether other people were involved. Preliminary findings indicate possible violations of the 2019 Wild Animal Conservation and Protection Act, and authorities have filed a formal complaint with Koh Samui Police Station. (NNT)
