SRIRACHA, Thailand – Former IBF flyweight world champion Amnat Ruenroeng was injured after his motorcycle veered into a wooded area beside the railway tracks in Bang Phra, Sriracha, Chonburi, on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 3. Good Samaritans found Amnat at the scene and helped him after reportedly noticing signs of intoxication. They persuaded him not to continue riding, fearing another accident could occur.
Sittichai Jongkrod, 36, one of the people who came to Amnat’s aid, said he was driving past the area when he saw the former champion ride his motorcycle into the woods and fall. He stopped to help, while another passer-by joined him in trying to convince Amnat not to ride again. Sittichai said he had seen Amnat riding normally earlier in the morning but later found him apparently intoxicated, raising concerns for his safety if he continued riding alone.
The Good Samaritans subsequently contacted former police officer and well-known crime fighter Jonny Mueprap to explain the situation and seek help in looking after Amnat. Sutthichai Samrit said Jonny agreed to help and was prepared to receive Amnat. He said he would take Amnat to Ubon Ratchathani on Thursday afternoon so he could stay under Jonny’s care and have someone to talk to, rather than remain alone while intoxicated.
Amnat, a former member of Thailand’s national amateur boxing team, later became a professional boxer and won the IBF flyweight world title at 112 pounds. The people who assisted him said their immediate priority was preventing him from riding again and avoiding another accident.
