PATTAYA, Thailand – Pattaya municipal officers cleared clutter and makeshift shelters from a public walkway near Khlong Nok Yang and the Sinil Shrine in Naklua on Aug. 31, restoring access to an area that had become obstructed and uncomfortable for nearby residents. Officers from the Naklua municipal enforcement unit, together with Pattaya City’s Environmental Office, inspected the area following complaints about items and makeshift structures occupying the walkway. Some of the materials were also reported to be causing unpleasant odors and affecting the surrounding community.
Among those found sheltering at the site was a woman accompanied by her dog. The scene highlighted the human side of a problem that city officials regularly face: people with nowhere else to stay sometimes make temporary shelters in public spaces, even when doing so affects the rights of others to use those areas. Officials removed the clutter and makeshift structures and cleaned the area, returning the walkway to public use.
While the situation may call for understanding and compassion, city authorities also have a responsibility to keep public walkways clean, accessible and safe. The rules apply to everyone, particularly when public space is being blocked or neighboring residents are affected. The cleanup was therefore not simply about removing a shelter. It was about restoring a shared public space while leaving the broader issue of people living rough to be addressed with appropriate assistance and dignity.
