
BANGKOK, Thailand – The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and Mahidol University signed an academic cooperation agreement on August 17 to promote rail research, innovation, workforce development, and studies on Red Line extensions to Salaya and Nakhon Pathom. SRT Governor Anan Phonimdaeng and Mahidol University President Professor Piyamitr Sritara signed the memorandum of understanding at the university. This partnership combines SRT’s operational experience and data with the university’s academic and engineering expertise.
The agreement includes research on passenger and freight rail operations, knowledge exchange, academic activities, training, study visits, internships, and thesis development. Potential research topics include train scheduling, train movements and switching in station areas, engineering, and rail system management.
The organizations will also collaborate on studies and development for the Red Line extensions from Siriraj–Taling Chan–Salaya and Salaya–Nakhon Pathom. This work will focus on improving connections between stations and local communities, expanding public transport access, and enhancing travel convenience for passengers. SRT will offer Mahidol University personnel and students opportunities for research, thesis preparation, and practical training within the organization. Mahidol University will provide training and knowledge development for SRT staff.
The Mahidol University President stated that integrating academic knowledge with operational challenges will support research and innovation that address the country’s transportation needs.
The SRT Governor noted that the partnership will help apply academic research and technology to improve railway management, operational efficiency, safety, and passenger services. These efforts will result in tangible innovations and enhance the quality and efficiency of Thailand’s railway services. (NNT)
