LAMPANG, Thailand — After 1,460 days apart, a blind elephant calf and his mother were reunited in an emotional meeting that left fans and visitors in tears at the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre in Hang Chat district, Lampang. The center hosted the “1,460 Days of Waiting — Mae Saen Suay & Nong Saen Wan Fan Meet 2026” on August 15, bringing together supporters and tourists for the long-awaited reunion of the beloved mother-and-son pair.
“Mae Saen Suay,” a 45-year-old female elephant, was placed under the care of the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre after being donated by Phra Kru Sangharak Weerawat Weerawattano, known as Phra Kru Odd of Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Mai. She later gave birth to “Nong Saen Wan,” a male calf who is now seven years old. Born with a serious physical condition that left him completely blind in both eyes, Saen Wan was separated from his mother at just three years old so he could receive specialised treatment and rehabilitation.
Despite spending four years apart, the bond between mother and son appeared undiminished.
During their reunion, Saen Wan repeatedly reached out with his trunk to wrap around his mother and rubbed his head against her, while Mae Saen Suay remained close, displaying the protective instincts of a mother caring for her young.
The emotional reunion was witnessed by fans, tourists and officials, including Pairat Krutwisai, director of the National Elephant Institute under royal patronage. Popular singer Ying Thitikarn also attended as Saen Wan’s adoptive mother. She sang two of her well-known songs, “Asongkhai” (Timeless) and “Ya Pluay Mue” (Don’t Let Go), in a moving tribute to the mother-and-son bond, and also made a donation to the elephant conservation center. The event provided an unforgettable experience for visitors while highlighting the center’s continuing efforts to protect the welfare and emotional wellbeing of Thailand’s elephants.
