BANGKOK, Thailand – The national costumes widely embraced by Thai women today for royal ceremonies, state functions, and auspicious occasions are the result of the far-reaching vision of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. Through Her Majesty’s initiative to research historical Thai dress and design Thai attire that embody the nation’s refined identity, the Chud Thai Phra Rajaniyom was created. These costumes reflect Her Majesty’s ingenuity in fashioning and preserving a sartorial tradition that flawlessly maintains the essence of Thai heritage.
The dissemination of Chud Thai Phra Rajaniyom thus formed part of Her Majesty’s broader work in promoting and safeguarding Thai sartorial traditions, as well as in documenting and communicating knowledge of Thai national dress to audiences in Thailand and around the world.
Her Majesty personally selected and approved eight styles of Thai national dress: Chud Thai Ruean Ton, Chud Thai Chitralada, Chud Thai Amarin, Chud Thai Boromphiman, Chud Thai Dusit, Chud Thai Chakri, Chud Thai Siwalai, and Chud Thai Chakraphat. Collectively known as Chud Thai Phra Rajaniyom (Thai Royally-Favored Costumes), these ensembles were later authorized by Her Majesty to be adopted and tailored by the general public.
As a result, Chud Thai Phra Rajaniyom has become the definitive archetype of Thailand’s modern national dress for women, recognized and widely worn across the nation.
