PATTAYA, Thailand – Pattaya City officials have inspected damage at Kating Lai Beach Park after waves eroded more than 20 metres of the shoreline, causing sections of the walkway, concrete pavement and landscaped areas to crack and sink. Pattaya Mayor’s Secretary Bancha Kullawanich and officials from the city’s public complaint response center inspected the site after residents and park users reported the damage on August 12.
The erosion has created cracks, cavities and subsidence beneath sections of the concrete surface used regularly by people walking, running and cycling. Officials said the affected area appears to be expanding. As an immediate safety measure, Pattaya City has ordered metal railings and barriers to be installed around damaged sections to prevent residents and tourists from entering potentially dangerous areas while longer-term repairs are prepared.
Pattaya had previously planned a 59-metre retaining wall at the site with a budget of 1.96 million baht. However, two attempts to find a contractor through open bidding received no offers. The project was subsequently cancelled, with the city now preparing a revised design and new cost estimate to reflect the worsening erosion. The city plans to develop a new coastal protection scheme covering the affected area and seek funding in the 2027 fiscal year. In the meantime, large rocks are being considered as a temporary wave barrier to reduce wave impact and slow further erosion.
Kating Lai Beach Park is an important recreation and exercise area for residents and visitors, particularly during the evening. Pattaya City said it would continue monitoring the site and expand safety barriers if further damage is detected. Residents can report additional damage to the Pattaya City Hotline at 1337.
