BANGKOK, Thailand – A group of rescue volunteers has been suspended from duty after a video showing several volunteers allegedly assaulting a taxi driver near MRT Fai Chai Station was widely shared on social media, August 12. The footage shows around three to four rescue volunteers chasing and surrounding the taxi driver before allegedly attacking him near the station’s coin-exchange area, where the driver had reportedly run seeking help.
Both sides later filed complaints at Bang Khun Non Police Station. Initial reports indicated that the confrontation stemmed from an argument over driving, with the vehicles allegedly cutting each other off and one reportedly following closely behind the other. The taxi driver suffered serious injuries, including broken ribs, a broken nose and a fractured cheekbone. His taxi was also damaged, with windows smashed around the vehicle.
Following the incident, the foundation overseeing the volunteers ordered the group to be suspended from work and removed from volunteer duties pending further action. Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the confrontation and the alleged assault.
